All Internet Explorer 10.0 users, please note that the RISe application isn't yet compatible with the most recent IE browser update. In order to use RISe while using IE 10.0 you will need to make sure to do the following:

1. Under "Tools", on your menu bar, select "Compatibility View Settings".

2. On the pop-up window that appears, make sure that the box next to "Display all websites in Compatibility View" is checked.

3. Click on the "Close" button.

HST Rebate information for Researchers

Research is one of the cornerstones of UBC and much of it relies on the amount of funding and tax rebates that are available to enable it.

Until 31st March 2013, UBC can still claim rebates of 67% of the 5% Goods & Services Tax (GST), and 75% of the 7% Provincial Component of HST respectively – combined amount of 71.67% of the 12% Harmonized Sales Tax (HST). However, as of 1st April 2013 HST will be coming to an end in BC and will be replaced with a combination of GST and Provincial Sales Tax (PST) at a general tax rate of 7%.

The re-implemented PST, like the previous PST, will be a retail sales tax that applies when a taxable good or service is acquired for personal or business use, unless a specific exemption applies.

ACTION REQUIRED
It is important that if you are planning to make any purchases in the coming weeks, that you initiate the purchase as soon as possible to ensure that the invoices for payment can be made before 31st March 2013 to allow you to take advantage of the rebates.

Any HST applicable invoices received and dated after March 31st will not be eligible for rebates on the provincial portion of HST. Please note there is no transition period for this change.

The RISe system will we unavailable from 2am on December 22nd to 5am on December 24th.

The Ethics Office is currently undertaking a variety of initiatives to improve the review of clinical and social science/behavioural research at UBC. One of the most important of these initiatives has been to update of the behavioural and clinical ethics application forms to ensure that they more appropriate for these different types of research and that each form more appropriately addresses different types of projects such as chart reviews, class projects, the creation of research registries, databases and tissue banks, etc.

On 15 December 2012, the existing human research ethics application form will be replaced by the new clinical and behavioural research application forms. The transition should not impact your current approved research ethics applications or those currently in submission, as all essential information on the present application form should seamlessly transfer over to the new application form. However, if you do experience any problems, please contact the applicable administrator of the research ethics board where you have submitted your application.

Next to final drafts of the new forms will be posted in pdf versions on the Office of Research Ethics web-site, and the RISe web-site on December 1st, 2012.

A new conflict of interest/commitment declaration launches July 21st in RISe. It reflects changes to UBC’s conflict of interest and conflict of commitment policy 97.
